The Vision

Creating Lovable Companions
SPIRITS began as an ambitious in-house project by Tower Art Studio. Our goal was to reinvent the classic Match-3 puzzle experience by introducing a core gameplay mechanic centered around charming, helpful little monsters—the Spirits. We aimed to create a world where characters weren’t just static elements on a board, but active companions that assist players, celebrate victories, and react emotionally to every move. The entire visual language was built around a vibrant, polished, and highly appealing casual art style designed to stand out in a crowded mobile market.

Character Design & Visual Hierarchy

Designing Distinct Personalities
Every single Spirit was crafted from the ground up with a unique silhouette, color palette, and personality traits. Our 2D artists focused on creating highly expressive eyes and shapes that instantly convey emotions. We established a strict visual hierarchy, ensuring that despite the vibrant colors, characters remained instantly readable on mobile screens amidst intense Match-3 board effects.
Cohesive Match-3 UI/UX Layouts

Intuitive and Engaging Player Interfaces
To support the gameplay, our team designed a custom UI/UX wrap. This included the main Match-3 game board, seamless pop-up screens, reward chests, and progress maps. The interface style perfectly mirrored the soft, stylized aesthetic of the Spirits, utilizing custom buttons and polished icons to create a fully immersive user experience.
2D Spine Animation & "Juicy" Gameplay VFX
Creating Emotional Depth through Movement
Movement was critical to making the Spirits feel alive. Using Esoteric Spine, we developed advanced skeletal rigs for each character, focusing on smooth mesh deformations for organic, bouncy animations. We built comprehensive animation sheets including:

  • Idle cycles that showcase the character's unique nature while waiting for a turn.
  • Assistance animations when a Spirit triggers a power-up on the board.
  • Joyous celebration loops for level completion. Every animation was combined with lightweight, performance-optimized 2D VFX to deliver that ultimate "juicy" feel essential for top-tier casual puzzle games.
